Type and the Book
Discover how type shapes reading and meaning under the guidance of Klára Zápotocká. The graphic design course Type and the Book will teach you how to work with typography, materials, and the page so that text gains a strong visual form.
Are you the kind of person who reads books starting with the colophon? Are you interested in how type shapes our reading perception and how to create visually compelling publications? In the Type and the Book course, we will focus on the relationship between type, content, and material. We will discuss the elements that influence readability, rhythm, and the overall expression of a page; explore the history and anatomy of type; and examine typesetting principles, typographic conventions, and their deliberate breaking. You will learn how typography has evolved, which trends shape contemporary practice, and how to work with them in both authorial and client-based projects. The exercises will be both experimental and practical, allowing you to test theoretical insights through hands-on work.
The course is intended for anyone who wants to better understand the visual structure of printed media—from books and magazines to posters, zines, and small self-published prints. We will focus on the physical form of publications and working with different materials. We will try to “read” type differently and understand the book as an object that connects artistic, craft, and conceptual dimensions.
The course is ideal for graphic design enthusiasts, illustrators, and both beginner and advanced creators who want to deepen their understanding of typography. It focuses on type, print, format, and printing materials (from paper to fabric or plastic). This is not a course in designing professional typefaces; the main goal is to understand how to work graphically through typography—how to choose and combine typefaces, how to guide the reader across a page, and how to turn text into a strong visual experience.
Recommendations:
-
●
The course is both conceptual and practical, focusing on understanding principles and their application rather than on technical instruction in specific software. Basic knowledge of graphic design software is an advantage; there will also be space for manual and experimental approaches.
-
●
We recommend basic knowledge of Adobe programs for this course. To build software skills, we suggest our Adobe and Figma courses.
-
●
The course includes independent work between sessions. The workload will not be extensive, but regularity will allow you to develop your projects smoothly and without stress.
